Happy New Year from the Urban League of Philadelphia Reentry Team!
As we begin January, we want to help you start the year strong. One of the most important steps in a successful reentry journey is having the right identification and personal documents. These documents are often required for employment, housing, healthcare, benefits, and education.
Below is a Reentry ID and Documents Checklist to help you understand what you need and why it matters.

ID & DOCUMENTS CHECKLIST
Birth Certificate A birth certificate is needed to apply for other forms of identification and services. It is often required for state identification, employment, and public benefits.
Social Security Card (SSN) A Social Security card is required for employment, taxes, benefits, and opening bank accounts. Make sure the name on your Social Security card matches your other documents.
State ID or Driver’s License A Pennsylvania State ID or Driver’s License is necessary for job applications, housing, medical appointments, and everyday identification. A state ID is available even if you do not drive.
WHY THESE DOCUMENTS MATTER
Having proper identification helps remove barriers and opens doors to:
• Employment opportunities
• Stable housing
• Medical and mental health services
• Education and job training programs
• Public benefits and financial stability
