2026 Jobseeker Starter Kit

Updated: 2 days ago

Build Stability. Build Momentum.

A new year is a moment to pause, reflect, and recommit to what matters. For jobseekers and career up-skillers across Greater Philadelphia, it is also a time to think intentionally about how we show up for our communities and ourselves.

At the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia, service begins with strengthening our neighborhoods, supporting one another, and creating pathways for families to thrive. Financial empowerment is part of that work. When people have access to tools, guidance, and opportunity, stability grows and momentum follows. This 2026 Jobseeker Starter Kit brings together practical steps, resources, and encouragement to help you move forward with purpose, whether you are entering the workforce, exploring a new career direction, or working toward advancement.

Service as a Pathway to Purpose and Community Impact

Service begins with care for our communities. It is about showing up, contributing time and energy, and strengthening the neighborhoods and organizations that support us all. Through service, we build connection, trust, and shared responsibility.

Volunteering can help you discover what kind of work energizes you while strengthening your resume and community connections. Service reflects initiative, leadership, and commitment, and often helps people recognize strengths they did not know they had.

Service looks different at different stages:

  • Entry-level jobseekers can volunteer to gain hands-on experience and build relationships

  • Mid-level professionals can contribute skills through project coordination or capacity-building work

  • Experienced leaders can serve on boards or advisory committees to guide mission-driven work

When we invest in our communities, we help create stability and opportunity for everyone, while also supporting long-term career growth and financial empowerment rooted in shared progress.

How to Jumpstart Your Job Search in 2026

These five focus areas offer a practical starting point for jobseekers at every stage.

1. Clarify Your Career Direction

Take time to reflect on what you want, what you are curious about, and the kind of work that aligns with your values. Career exploration supports both new professionals and those considering a career pivot. Our career coaching team can help you identify options, name goals, and map next steps with intention.

2. Share Your Professional Story

Your professional materials tell the story of your experience, your values, and the direction you are moving toward. An updated resume sets the foundation, and for creative fields, a portfolio can reflect your skills and voice. LinkedIn is also a tool for positioning your experience and engaging your network with intention as you pursue your next role. We work alongside jobseekers to strengthen resumes, clarify narratives, and ensure materials reflect both capability and purpose.

3. Build Skills That Open Doors

Building skills that lead to stability looks different depending on your goals and industry. Foundational digital skills support success across most roles, while hands-on and technical training open doors in construction, skilled trades, and tech-enabled careers. We offer free upskilling opportunities designed to support people entering the workforce, reentering after a gap, or pivoting into high-demand fields.

4. Step Into Opportunities with Confidence

Interview preparation builds confidence. Practicing how you talk about your experience, strengths, and goals helps you show up grounded and prepared. Workshops and one-on-one interview support are available to help you prepare, practice, and move forward with confidence.

5. Strengthen Your Financial Foundation

Financial empowerment supports long-term career growth and stability. Understanding income, expenses, credit, personal goals, and benefits helps you stay focused as momentum builds. Financial empowerment workshops are offered throughout the year in partnership with trusted local banks and community partners.

Moving Forward Together

At the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia, we believe stability is built through preparation, service, and support, and that momentum grows when skills, confidence, and financial empowerment come together. In 2026, our Workforce Team is committed to walking alongside you as you take intentional steps toward opportunity, purpose, and economic self-reliance.

Together, we build stability, strengthen our communities, and move forward with purpose.
