Funded By

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a Key Component

One of the core elements of the Out4Good program is the integration of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Proven to be highly effective in reducing recidivism among formerly incarcerated individuals, CBT helps participants understand and manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By addressing past trauma and promoting positive decision-making, CBT supports participants in overcoming the challenges they face in reintegrating into society.

The program seeks to achieve this objective by providing participants with comprehensive job training, access to employment opportunities, individualized case management, and peer-to-peer supportive services. SIDE EFFECTS  OF
CONGATIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Brian S., now 31 years old, has had a long and tumultuous history with the criminal justice system, having been in and out of prison since the young age of 15. Frequently confined to the Restricted Housing Unit (RHU) for disciplinary infractions and altercations, Brian's time behind bars has been marked by a pattern of disruptive behavior.

However, a recent shift has occurred. Brian states that participating in the Out4Good program has prompted him to pause and deeply consider the consequences of his actions, a revelation he has not experienced before. In his own words, "This class gives me a reason to think. This class gives me hope because you guys really care and I don't want to miss a session because I am in the RHU."

Brian's newfound perspective highlights the transformative power of the Pathways Home program. By providing a supportive environment and instilling a sense of purpose, the program has enabled Brian to confront the root causes of his past choices and cultivate a renewed outlook on his future. This testimony serves as a testament to the program's ability to reach even the most challenging participants and inspire them to break the cycle of recidivism.

MICHELLE P.

"Michelle P. was released early from PICC (Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center) by her judge to attend 30 days of inpatient drug treatment. I waited for her at the drug treatment facility and was present when the sheriffs dropped her off. The sheriffs then drove away. I walked outside, waved to her, and she waved back before hopping into a car and driving away.

For the past three weeks, I have been speaking with Michelle, trying to convince her to return to treatment, but she refuses to provide me with her current address. It is evident that she is using crack cocaine again.

Her judge, instead of issuing a warrant for her arrest, has given me until June 14th to get Michelle back into treatment. The judge stated that if the Urban League is unable to help her, she will need to go back to prison. I understand that we cannot help everyone, but I am determined to assist Michelle. To hear her plead for help, yet be so consumed by the drugs, is truly heartbreaking. We need to find a pathway home for Michelle and women like her."
