Black Women Deserve Care, Safety & Wellness at Every Stage of Life

Black women continue facing some of the most alarming healthcare disparities in the United States, particularly surrounding maternal health, chronic illness, emotional wellness, and access to equitable care.

As we recognize Women’s Health Month and Black Maternal Health Week this May, it is critical that conversations move beyond awareness alone.

Black women are disproportionately impacted by:

  • Maternal mortality

  • Pregnancy complications

  • Healthcare bias

  • Hypertension

  • Fibroids

  • Delayed diagnosis

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Chronic stress exposure

  • Caregiver burnout

These disparities are not caused by biology. They are deeply connected to systemic inequities, racial bias within healthcare systems, environmental stressors, unequal access to care, and generations of medical neglect.

Many Black women also carry the emotional labor of supporting families, workplaces, communities, and loved ones while neglecting their own emotional and physical wellness.

At the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia, we believe women’s wellness is a community issue. When Black women are healthy, protected, supported, and thriving, families and entire communities become stronger.
