Black History and the Future of Work

From Legacy to Innovation

Black communities have always been innovators, builders, and problem-solvers, advancing industries, technologies, and ideas even when access to capital, education, and opportunity was restricted. From early inventors and industrial pioneers to today’s technologists, engineers, and digital creators, Black innovation has shaped the American economy in profound and lasting ways.

That legacy continues.

Today, digital and technical skills are not optional, they are essential. As the future of work evolves, access to technology training, industry-recognized credentials, and digital literacy determines who can compete, who can advance, and who can build long-term stability for themselves and their families across Greater Philadelphia.

Through our Workforce Development and Urban Tech pathways, the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia equips jobseekers and working adults with in-demand digital and technical skills aligned with today’s labor market. Participants can pursue certifications including Scrum Master, Data Analytics, CompTIA IT Fundamentals, CompTIA A+, Google AI Fundamentals, and foundational digital literacy training, all designed to open doors to high-growth sectors.

Access is expanded through strategic partnerships that remove cost and scheduling barriers. Through Verizon Skill Forward and the edX platform, learners gain access to free, self-paced courses developed by leading universities and industry partners. Locally, our partnership with Drexel University and NorthStar strengthens digital literacy and beginner cybersecurity training, supporting clear progression from foundational skills to advanced career pathways.

This Black History Month, we honor a legacy of innovation not only by remembering it, but by investing in it. By equipping our community with the skills required for today’s economy, we strengthen economic stability, increase earning potential, and create pathways to long-term empowerment.

Innovation is our history. Access is our work. Opportunity is the goal.
