Back to School, Ready to Win: Fall Prep Tips for High School and College Students

Summer is winding down, and a new school year is right around the corner. Whether you are heading into high school hallways or a college campus, the students who start strong are usually the ones who prepared before day one. The good news is that getting ready does not have to be stressful. A few smart moves now can set you up for a confident, successful fall.

For high school students

  • Reset your routine early. Start shifting your sleep and wake times about two weeks before school begins so the first Monday does not knock you out.

  • Get organized before the rush. Set up a planner or calendar app, gather your supplies, and create a simple, distraction-free study space at home.

  • Set one or two real goals. Maybe it is raising a grade, joining a club, or asking for help sooner. Write them down and revisit them monthly.

  • Explore your future now. It is never too early to think about college, trade programs, internships, or scholarships. Talk to a counselor, and watch for Urban League youth and scholarship opportunities.

For college students

  • Map out your semester in week one. Put every exam, paper, and deadline from your syllabi into one calendar.

  • Build your budget. Books, food, and transportation add up fast. Plan your spending, look for student discounts, and know your financial aid timeline.

  • Find your people and your resources. Connect with professors during office hours, join a student organization, and locate your campus tutoring, career, and wellness centers before you need them.

  • Start building your professional foundation. Update your resume, set up or refresh your LinkedIn, and look into internships early.

For every student

  • Take care of your whole self. Sleep, movement, good food, and rest are how you perform. Protect your mental health and ask for support when you need it.

  • Stay connected. Family, mentors, and community are your safety net. Lean on them, and let them cheer you on.

At the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia, we believe education is one of the surest pathways to opportunity, and we are cheering you on every step of the way. Here is to a school year full of growth, confidence, and momentum. You've got this!
