Certification for City and State Contracts

Expanding Access to Opportunity

Entrepreneurs are in business to do more than sell goods and services. What customers are truly paying for is expertise, specialized knowledge, and the unique way a business solves their problems.

As subject matter experts in their field, business owners command value because their clients trust them to deliver results and free up their most valuable resource: time.

Sustaining a profitable business requires a constant pursuit of new revenue opportunities. One of the most powerful and underutilized pipelines available to small businesses is government and corporate contracting, unlocked through formal business certification.

Certifications granted by organizations such as the U.S. Small Business Administration, Women's Business Enterprise National Council, and National Minority Supplier Development Council signal to municipalities, government entities, and major corporations that a business meets criteria they are actively required or incentivized to contract with.

Certification comes at a cost. Application fees, documentation, and annual renewal requirements mean businesses must be operationally and financially ready before pursuing a designation.

Timing matters. Certification is most valuable when a business has the capacity to respond to opportunities and fulfill contract deliverables.

The return on that investment, however, is significant. Certified businesses are specifically sought out across city, state, and federal procurement pipelines, and many corporations carry mandatory supplier diversity goals that certified businesses are positioned to fulfill.

Holding multiple certifications further broadens eligibility and competitive advantage.

Certification does not guarantee a contract. It guarantees a seat at the table where contracts are awarded.

Staying certified is only part of the equation. Business owners must remain informed, engaged, and connected to procurement education, coaching, and networking opportunities that keep them contract-ready and competitive.

The Urban League Entrepreneurship Center is here to support that journey every step of the way.
