May is officially recognized as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich histories, traditions, cultures, and contributions of AANHPI communities across the United States.
Throughout Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities continue shaping the region’s cultural, economic, artistic, educational, culinary, healthcare, and entrepreneurial landscape in powerful ways.
From Chinatown in Philadelphia to immigrant-owned small businesses, healthcare workers, educators, artists, advocates, students, and community leaders throughout our region, AANHPI communities continue helping define the vibrancy and diversity of the neighborhoods we call home.
At the Urban League of Greater Philadelphia, we believe cultural celebration is deeply connected to community wellness. Representation matters. Feeling seen matters. Preserving heritage matters.
Across many communities, culture becomes a source of healing, identity, resilience, belonging, and collective care. Food traditions, storytelling, music, language, spirituality, family connection, and intergenerational wisdom all play important roles in emotional wellness and community strength.
At the same time, many AANHPI communities continue navigating challenges connected to xenophobia, discrimination, invisibility, language access barriers, mental health stigma, and underrepresentation.
This month provides an important opportunity not only to celebrate heritage, but also to deepen conversations around solidarity, visibility, equity, and shared community care.
The Urban League remains committed to building bridges across communities and supporting spaces where all people feel respected, valued, protected, and empowered.
Greater Philadelphia becomes stronger when we celebrate the cultures, traditions, and stories that make our region beautifully diverse.
