GEAR UP is funded by the United States Department of Education to help low-income students succeed in school and post-secondary education.

This is the third year that The Urban League of Philadelphia has provided program support for GEAR UP in the School District of Philadelphia.

In 2012/13, ULP has expanded GEAR UP to eight high schools.  GEAR UP brings mentors to inspire and guide the students. It offers innovative programming to engage them and motivate them to graduate from high school and enroll in college or another form of post-secondary education.

In 2012/13, GEAR UP  launched “Behind the Business.” The four-week program combines in-class instruction with visits to local businesses. The program gives students hands-on experience as they learn how the business world functions.
