On behalf of the Urban League of Philadelphia's Board of Directors, we welcome you to our website!

This is an exciting time for our city and the nation at large. The election of President Barack H. Obama has inspired many people to believe that, with hard work, belief in yourself and a strong support system, anything is possible.

And while optimism is high, we all know that many challenges await us. We are experiencing an economic downturn that rivals the Great Depression. Jobless claims continue to rise and are approaching double digits for minorities. The dream of home ownership is becoming a nightmare for many who, unable to stay current with mortgage payments, find themselves facing foreclosure and financial ruin. And the goal of enrolling in a college or university becomes less attainable for some young people as financial assistance and quality schools elude them.

Since 1917, we have helped African Americans in the Philadelphia region improve their lives. We continue to reach our goals by creating connections through collaborations, from ensuring that our Board of Directors is made up of the top corporate and nonprofit minds in the region, to creating opportunities for our clients to achieve financial empowerment through entrepreneurial and job training programs.

Now more than ever, we are intent to see that people throughout the region understand that the Urban League of Philadelphia can make a difference in the lives of those in greatest need of its services. We are committed to making Philadelphia and its surrounding communities better for everyone. And we look forward to engaging you in our work. If you are not yet a member join us. If you have skills or resources that can help us in our mission, let us know. Attend some of our events and see how you can get involved. Use your voice to empower the change that closes equality gaps and brings more of our fellow citizens into the economic mainstream.
