The harmonic quality of music has the ability to cross the multicultural
divide and bring much needed healing, harmony and peace to our global
community. Philadelphia, a city known for it's rich heritage, culture and
traditions has produced music loved and cherished around the world. The
Urban League of Philadelphia's Annual Song of Equality Gala pays tribute to
one of America's most prominent songwriters who has used music as a vehicle
to heal social ills, to promote unity and to economically empower
individuals within the African-American community.
"This nation has always had the music of harmony, the song of equality,
running through its dreams. It never played that melody because it wanted
to use only the white keys. It's time for it to start using the full
keyboard of human resources to bring peace, harmony and justice to this
bitter and divided land."
The Song of Equality Gala was born out of these prolific words spoken in
1970 by then National Urban League President, Whitney M. Young, Jr. In May
2002, the Urban League sponsored its first Song of Equality Gala with over
600 guests. The black-tie affair featured the award-winning performer Jerry
Butler, and we presented the Harmony Award to Grover Washington, Jr.
posthumously. In May 2003, we hosted 700 guests that were entertained by
Howard Hewitt, and Patti LaBelle accepted the Harmony Award. In 2005, we
paid tribute to Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff with the Harmony Award and the
dynamic duo Ashford & Simpson provided the evening's entertainment for 750
guests. In 2006, we enjoyed over 750 guests and introduced a new, hand
crafted Harmony Award created by Tiffany & Co. In 2006, we honored Teddy
Pendergrass, and Peabo Bryson gave an electrifying performance.
