The Urban League of Young Professionals (ULYP)
The Urban League Young Professionals (ULYP) is a network of young professionals (age 21 to 44), across the country who provide leadership development, economic empowerment and community volunteer opportunities for other young professionals. The organization trains, develops, and educates young professionals to take leadership roles within the Urban League of Philadelphia, the civil rights movement, and society-at-large. Members of ULYP are defining, developing, implementing, and leading the next generation civil rights agenda.
This is an exciting time in the Urban League movement! As both our country and our City stand at the threshold of change, the ULYP stands ready to support our community by empowering the Young Professionals of today to be our nation’s leaders tomorrow. With a new slate of Officers, the ULYP is posed to reach new heights. Through our programs and community empowerment projects we will help the Urban League of Philadelphia move forward the agenda of Economic Advancement, Educational Achievement and Engagement for all people in Philadelphia. Our theme for this year is “Empower Me, Empower We”.
The ULYP vision of "reaching new heights" has three components:
- Social & Professional Networks - The ULYP will be a place to meet people with similar goals and interests, and a place to connect to the business and corporate world while coming into contact with mentors, role models and life long friends.
- Stewardship & Giving - The 2005 State of Black America report states, "All African Americans, especially African Americans in the middle class, must actively and consistently support such African American institutions as black churches, historically black colleges and universities, local community organizations, and civil rights groups like the Urban League with money and volunteered time. This 'Civic Tithing' will not only funnel much-needed financial resources to these organizations, it will also help energize and direct the "human capital" wealth of the black community in general."
- Service & Commitment - Deepening the engagement of Urban League members is a strategic goal of the ULP. Our members will be mentors, volunteers and resources that allow this dynamic UL movement to become a reality in the Philadelphia region. Our members, forty-something and under, are intrinsically linked to this strategy. The ULP affiliate cannot realize its vision of being a business and community leader known as the leading source of empowering all people in Philadelphia and throughout the region, without the engagement of all of its members.
