The mission of the Urban League is to empower African Americans and other people of need to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.
Our Movement
Established in 1910, the National Urban League is the nation’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its 103 local affiliates that provide services to more than 2 million people nationwide. Since 1917, the Urban League of Philadelphia, as part of this national network, provides direct services, research and policy advocacy to help individuals and communities reach their fullest potential.

Our Strategy The Urban League employs a three-point strategy known as The 3 E’s - Economic Advancement, Educational Achievement and Engagement.
- Economic Advancement: Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency.
- Educational Achievement: Ensuring that all of our children are well educated and prepared for economic self-reliance.
- Engagement: Empowering all people to take an active role in public policy and leadership in their communities. Promoting and ensuring our civil rights by actively working to eradiate all barriers to equal participation in all aspects of American society.
