Advocacy

Our Occupy the Vote campaign, an initiative of the National Urban League, was a successful effort in 2012.

According to a new Pew Research Center analysis, “Blacks voted at a higher rate this year than other minority groups and for the first time in history may also have voted at a higher rate than whites.”

However, our job is not completed until every African American in our region is registered to vote. With a Pennsylvania Gubernatorial election on the horizon, we will continue to engaged eligible voters throughout 2013. We have phone banks and direct outreach scheduled for the spring and summer months and will be recruiting volunteers to supplement our staff.

Diversity Report Card:

An offspring of 2012 Empowerment Week’s CEO Symposium, the Diversity Report Card asks companies to “grade” themselves on diversity in five key areas:

  • Corporate boards
  • Executive Suites
  • Employee base
  • Supplier spend
  • Community philanthropy and engagement

The initiative has been adopted by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and all the chambers members have been asked to grade their companies. Results will be the topic of the 2013 CEO Symposium.
